Statement from Mayor Johnson on fatal accident
Mayor Otis Johnson issued the following statement regarding the pedestrian accident involving two Swedish citizens late Tuesday night:
"I have spent time with our Swedish visitors over the past several days, and have found them to be warm, friendly, and deeply interested in the City of Savannah and the possibility of establishing economic ties with the region. We can learn much from the people of this country, and I truly believe that the groundwork laid during E-Days will have lasting benefits for Savannah and the rest of the State. This positive experience makes last night's tragic accident even more difficult to bear. From what I have been told, Nils Eric Svensson was a good friend to many and was integral to making this event a success. On behalf of the City of Savannah, I offer my condolences to Mr. Svensson's family and to the entire Swedish delegation, and offer prayers for the swift recovery of Ms. Christine Bjarkby, who was injured. Though it is hard to see the reason why things happen as they do, may it comfort you to know that loving thoughts go out to all of you during this time of great sorrow and pain."
