| Yamacraw Bluff Marker on Bay Street West
A rectangular stone marker on Bay Street, west of City Hall was created in 1930 by the DAR (State Chapter and 3 local chapters) to mark the site of Yamacraw Bluff where Oglethorpe landed in 1733 to found the colony of Georgia and the city of Savannah.
The bronze inscriptional tablet on one of the vertical sides says: "This is Yamacraw Bluff where the Colony of Georgia was founded, February 12, 1733, by General James Edward Oglethorpe. Voted by the Georgia Daughters of the American Revolution - the Most Historic Spot in Georgia."
The marker was erected in anticipation of the Bicentennial celebration, of the founding of Georgia, in 1933. |
