FIRE MARSHAL'S OFFICE
Craig Landolt - Fire Marshal
The Office of the Fire Marshal conducts all fire and life safety code enforcement activities through building plans examination and on-site fire inspections. Fire Marshals are trained and certified through national certification processes to determine code violations and offer remedies to those violations. Fire and life safety codes are adopted mostly at the state level, although there are some local ordinances that are more strict than adopted state codes. Fire Marshals use these codes and ordinances to ensure that public buildings are safe when occupied, and that should an emergency occur, occupants can safely escape without injury or death.
How Does It Affect Me?
Fire and life safety codes are designed to keep you safe in any number of public places from movie theaters to churches, schools to hotels, and restaurants to festivals. Fire Marshals ensure that sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and other fire protection systems are always functional should a fire break out. Our Marshals periodically check buildings to make sure that exits are accessible, fire lanes are not blocked, and chemical/thermal/electrical processes meet required adopted codes. All of this is designed to keep you safe at work and play. Whenever you are in a public building in Savannah, our Fire Marshals are looking out for your safety.
What If I Have A Question Or Concern About A Fire Ordinance?
Occasionally, you may find a valid concern at your work place or when you are out on the town. It's often best to discuss work-place concerns with your supervisor first and you or your supervisor can contact the Fire Marshal's office to make an appointment for an inspection. If you find a fire safety hazard in a public building, you may contact the Fire Marshal's Office to file a complaint. The complaints are confidential and Fire Marshals will follow up and act on any violations found. Complaints can be registered through the Contact Us page on this website, or by calling (912) 644-5960.
In any case, remember that Fire Marshals are educators not police officers. Their job is to make Savannah's public buildings safer for all its citizens and visitors by educating business owners in safe fire and life safety practices.
