Camp Trailblazers Impacts Girls' Lives
From starting the first ever Camp Trailblazers in the Southeast area, to making a group of young female strangers become a loving family, I commend you. My name is Nikkia McNeal, a Chatham County Youth Commission Candidate, and I enjoyed every moment with you during a week of hard-work, teamwork, and FUN. When I was asked to get interviewed by WTOC at the beginning of the camp, I had already felt the positive environment of the camp to where I knew what to say and that what I said would come from the heart. I appreciate the experience and love that you have giving the former campers and I. Every test, every sweat, and every push was beneficial and made us all stronger. I strongly encourage you to continue this for the young women of the future. This camp could change a person's way of life for the better.

Thank You,
Nikkia McNeal

My name is Avonna Kemp and I am a candidate for the Chatham County Youth Commission. I learned a lot while participating with Camp Trailblazers. One of the things that I learned was that working as a team is better and easier than working alone. I just wanted to tell you that I greatly appreciate your efforts in putting this program together and I can't wait for next year.

Sincerely,
Avonna Kemp

Hi im Shakira Bush and I'm a Chatham County Youth Commission Candidate. I was also apart of Camp Trailblazer. I enjoyed this camp and I hope that you keep this camp in the future. At this camp, I learned CPR, and I will never forget that. I just want to thank you so much for allowing me to participate in the camp.

---Shakira Bush

My name is Nia Dawson, and I am one of the candidates for the Chatham County Youth Commission who attended Camp Trailblazers. I learned not only about the physical sides of this profession, such as the correct way to put a ladder up (which is quite complicated considering the fact that you must kneel beside it, walk it up to the wall, and the base must be 75 degrees from the wall), but about the teamwork involved in making sure as many lives are saved as possible. Thanks so much for taking the time to put something like this together for us.

---Nia Dawson

My name is Gabrielle Hunter; I am a Chatham County Youth Commission candidate, and a Camp Trailblazer alumnae. I would like to think you for allowing me to participate in this wonderful experience. I learned a lot of life lessons and opened my eyes to different aspects of the career opportunities in the fire department field. One (among many) of the most important tools that I grasped during this experience was teamwork. Teamwork is essential, because your life is inside of your fellow co-workers hands, and I admire that about the fire department. After this camp, I became interested in helping with Camp Trailblazers next summer, because I would like to share with others what you all instilled in me. My favorite event was the water fight, (even though my team lost), I had a great time. The environment was very warm and inviting; everyone was kind, and I'll never forget that.

PS: What is knowledge? POWER! And who are we? SUPER WOMEN! I am a super woman, thank you.

Sincerely,
Gabrielle Hunter

CAMP TRAILBLAZERS BREAKS GROUND

Participants in the inaugural Camp Trailblazers pose for photos with camp staff and Savannah Fire Chief Charles G. Middleton

The first of its kind summer program for young women in the Savannah area kicked into high gear Sunday, July 11th. Participants in the inaugural Camp Trailblazers summer program, hosted by Savannah Fire & Emergency Services, registered, received a tour of SFES Headquarters and enjoyed a firehouse spaghetti dinner prepared by firefighters assigned to Station 3 in historic downtown Savannah. During the following five days, the young women will be introduced to the fire service with the hope being that some of them will seriously considered making firefighting a career.

During the duration of the camp, the young women will experience many of the on-the-job stresses that accompany firefighters on their daily shifts. After being issued their PPE (personal protective equipment) and SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), the camp attendees will learn everything from firefighter safety, to proper use of fire extinguishers; from firefighter survival to CPR & first aid; and from climbing ladders to rappelling from buildings.
In addition to the hands-on activities, camp attendees will conduct daily physical fitness and participate in group discussions and mini-seminars on developing leadership and public speaking skills. They will also have the opportunity to work side-by-side and hand-in-hand with women who dedicate their lives to the fire service and who have decided to make firefighting their career of choice. Camp Trailblazers runs through Friday, July 16th.
CAMP TRAILBLAZERS

Camp Trailblazers is a weeklong summer camp for young women between 15 and 20 years old. The Savannah Fire & Emergency Services will be looking to introduce young females to a career in firefighting. With women firefighters as role models, the aim is to combat the deficit of female firefighters.

The camp is structured to give young women hands-on programs that introduce them to many aspects of the fire service and teach them about teamwork, problem solving and physical agility. This experience is transforming and takes place in a non-judgmental atmosphere. The instructors include professional female firefighters whose involvement helps the campers see their commitment to providing caring, trained mentors to work with these young women.

Camp Trailblazers relies heavily upon the importance of working together as a team. The young women participants will be empowered, gain confidence and leadership skills.

Vision

Camp Trailblazers is committed to maximizing women’s involvement in the fire service through education, by fostering leadership and by developing decision making skills in a safe, knowledgeable and fun environment. We firmly believe in promoting the concept that females can be an integral part of the fire service.

Goal

Our goal is to develop, support and implement an annual camp for young women in a fire service environment. This residential camp is designed to expose young women to a career path they might not have otherwise considered and locate a fire explorer post in their area that they may become involved with to continue their training.

Mission

The mission of Camp Trailblazers is to provide young women a safe, dynamic, interactive and physically challenging environment. Through intense hands-on experiences, training and instruction, participants will gain strength, knowledge .physical excellence and mental toughness, while building confidence and leadership skills.
